Nouns
Icelandic nouns are divided into three gender groups and several declension categories. There is no indefinite article in Icelandic but the definite article is added to the endings of the nouns.
As a beginner you can’t avoid mistakes. You’ll make improvements by making a priority list. Focus on the five largest declension categories in the beginning. They are: i-masculine nouns, a-feminine nouns, 0- and i-neuter nouns and ur-masculine nouns. The last one is the most difficult because of the question of whether it should be i-ending or not in the dative case.

Questions?
Prounouns
Pronouns are divided into 6 subcategories in Icelandic. They all inflect due to cases. All except the personal pronouns and the reflexive pronoun change by gender. The reflexive pronoun is the only pronoun that is the same in singular and plural.
If you’re a beginner start by focusing on the personal and possesive pronouns. The reflexive pronoun is also important. Next comes the demonstrative pronoun “þessi” (this/that) and these three independent pronouns: “allur” (everyone), “einhver” (someone) og “enginn” (nobody).

Numerals
The first four numerals are extremely difficult in Icelandic because they change both according to gender and cases.
If you’re a beginner, it‘s recommended to start by focusing on numbers concern you, such as: “kennitala”, your phone number and your year of birth or the year you moved to Iceland.
It’s also wise to prepare to answer questions about time like: “What time is it?” and “What day of the month is today?” If you work in an Icelandic store, you should also work on saying prices in Icelandic.
